New Technology At CMH

By Jim Flint, Ph.D.

Columbia Memorial Hospital (CMH) went “live” with their new CPSI computer system on August 1, 2005. This new system is hospital-wide, from the admitting/registration areas to nursing stations, ancillary services, patient accounting, and more. One aspect of CPSI, Chart link, will give the physicians access to the electronic medical records of their patients in their own offices, with the ability to pull up test results, nursing notes, etc. While the hospital has the goal of having a paperless medical record, currently both paper and electronic records are being kept.

The challenges of implementing such an all-encompassing system all at once were many. Super User groups were developed to address training needs, and weekly meetings were held to discuss issues and propose process changes to better utilize the CPSI system. Several training sessions were held in Mobile, Alabama where CPSI has their headquarters. Regional and national meetings are held annually to provider users an opportunity to discuss issues and propose enhancements to the CPSI system. CMH has committed to being a leader within their region and will be sending a group to the CPSI regional meeting this March in Seattle.

With the electronic medical record in every department within the hospital, CMH is at the forefront of many hospitals in the ever-expanding field of medical technology.
