CMH FOUNDATION COMPLETES DIGITAL MAMMOGRAPHY PROJECT, CARDIAC REHAB CENTER NEXT

Wednesday November 7, 2007

Digital mammography will be soon available to the women of the North Coast. Columbia Memorial Hospital Foundation announced that community generosity has allowed it to reach its goal of $300,000 towards the acquisition of a Digital Mammography Unit at Columbia Memorial Hospital. The equipment is on order and expected to be operational with the opening of the new Health and Wellness Pavilion next spring.

The funds were raised through contributions from the community through the Columbia Invitational Golf Tournament, the Radiothon hosted by New Northwest Broadcasters, and other individual donations, as well as grants from the Ann & Bill Swindells Charitable Trust and the Autzen Foundation.

“We are very grateful to the community for its outstanding support of the Digital Mammography Unit. This new technology will allow us to accommodate increased numbers of women requiring mammograms and improve early detection rates, leading to optimal results from breast cancer treatments,” said Terry Finklein, CEO at Columbia Memorial Hospital.

The Foundation Board of Directors voted at its October Board meeting to adopt a Cardiac Rehab Center as its next fundraising project. The Center will provide monitored exercise equipment, rehabilitative education and counseling to recovering cardiac patients. Cardiac Rehab patients need rehabilitation in a monitored setting with qualified personnel in attendance and a physician available on the premises at all times. Locating a Cardiac Rehab Center at Columbia Memorial Hospital will allow patients to receive this treatment locally without having to drive to Portland or Longview.

In addition to an individualized exercise program patients will also be provided continuing education and behavior modification. Potential topics are smoking cessation counseling, stress reduction, pharmacology, nutrition, and coronary risk factors. Hospital-based dieticians, pharmacists, chaplains, social services, and Cardiac Rehab staff will teach these classes.

“It is often prohibitive for recovering cardiac patients to travel significant distances to existing sites to get the rehabilitation they need,” said Jennifer Quigley, RN CCRN, Critical Care Manager at Columbia Memorial Hospital. “Many patients don’t get this exercise and education, which places them at a much higher risk for recurring heart attacks and other complications. Having a Cardiac Rehab Center here will provide optimal follow-up care for our patients and lead to improved health outcomes.”
